17 PERCENT ORPHAN RATE

In developing countries, the norm is about 2 percent of children that are classed as orphans. In South Africa that figure is more like 17 percent.

In 2005, 1,000,000 children in South Africa have lost both of their parents or their sole known parent -- usually their mother. Moreover, by 2010 that figure is expected to reach as high as 3 million.

South Africa has been especially hit hard by the AIDS pandemic and today 5.8 million people in South Africa presently have the deadly HIV/AIDS virus. In a country where 20 percent of all adults are infected with HIV that means these orphan children have no one to take care of them. They get no schooling, basic nutrition or hygiene. Studies show that orphan children face a much higher risk of sexual exploitation, hazardous labor, and a lifelong cycle of poverty and abuse. The staggering number of African children already orphaned due to AIDS is only the beginning of a crisis of gargantuan proportions, and “the worst is yet to come,” warned a recent UNICEF report.

Our Mission:

The mission of The Orphans of AIDS, South Africa is to improve the lives of all children that have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. We believe that every child has a right to a life that is free from sexual exploitation. Therefore we help more than just those that are affected by HIV/AIDS.

The Orphans of AIDS philosophy focuses on empowering local community-based organizations to provide basic elements to orphans and vulnerable children wherever needed.

General Priorities:

Our activities include fundraising, research, education and advocacy, and grants to organizations serving the affected populations in South Africa.

Our funding priorities include:

  • · Education for AIDS orphans.
  • · Humanitarian services and medical care to those affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • · Foster care and orphanage programs available.

The Project:

The project that we fully recommend is the Abandoned Baby Care facility in Johannesburg, South Africa.

About Abandoned Baby Care (ABC)

The abandoned Baby Care (ABC) is a facility where AIDS orphans receive care. Unlike other AIDS Orphan Institutions each child at ABC is not only an orphan, but either has HIV and or AIDS and is therefore a double victim.

Dr. Paul J. Caratti gives a grant to the directors of the (ABC) Abandoned Baby Care to help fund their work.

12 to 15 orphans ranging in ages from 6 months to 12 years old share one small house and receive round the clock care and supervision.

Many of these children have been rescued from along the side of the road or were found in the filthy garbage dumps of South Africa and have all been abandoned and rejected by society.

With the proper care of ABC many of these orphans are healed from HIV and grow up to be healthy. They are, however, still orphans that require the basic needs of life like food and education. These children all need emotional support, protection and a sense of belonging.

The Orphans of AIDS gives 100% of your designated donations to support the work of the South African, Abandoned Baby Care Project.

Through careful screening this project, like all others that we sponsor has been found to be reliable and a financially trustworthy institution with long-standing respect in the community.

For the South African community the long term objective of The Orphans of AIDS is to empower 100 additional homes to thus be used as multi-use HIV orphan care facilities providing for around 2,000 additional orphan children.
